Black and Global Majority Taster Day a Great Success
As part of our commitment to breaking down barriers in rowing, on the 30 August 2025 we ran a dedicated taster day for people from Black and global majority* backgrounds. Rowing has historically struggled with representation and accessibility, and this initiative is one way we are working to change that by providing a safe, welcoming entry point into the sport.
The event was promoted at UK Black Pride, on social media, and through outreach to community groups, hitting our target of 16 participants. Led by club co-founder and trustee Grant Ralph, and supported by a team of volunteer members, attendees were introduced to rowing in a fun, supportive environment. Activities included using the indoor rowing tank, trying rowing machines, and heading out on the water in our lake boats.
We were delighted that over half of those who attended went on to sign up for our Otterpups Learn to Row course, and we hope that once they have graduated they will go on to join the club or continue to row elsewhere.
*‘Global majority’ refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, Indigenous to the global south, or from other racially minoritised backgrounds, who make up the majority of the world’s population.
