Barnes & Mortlake Regatta 2025: A Classic Tideway Challenge
This year marked our fourth appearance at the Barnes & Mortlake Regatta — always a favourite for those seeking a true Tideway test. With no stake boats and plenty of Tideway quirks to contend with, it’s a regatta that demands sharp racing skills and even sharper steering.
B&M is one of the few events where part of the challenge is just getting aligned at the start, and with the elusive course length (is it 1.2km… or not?), there’s always an air of mystery. But with its glorious riverside veranda and buzzing atmosphere, it remains a highlight in the Otters' racing calendar.
Due to high demand this year, a number of our smaller entries were cut in the final week, but we still proudly sent two eights and a coxless quad to compete.
Our Novice Eight rose to the challenge with an impressive showing against Putney Town on their home water — a gutsy and spirited race that showcased how far they’ve come.
Our Intermediate Quad took on a tough three-way match-up against UCL and Cygnet, both local clubs, from the often-tricky central lane. Steering the Tideway is never simple, and this was our most technically demanding race of the season. Huge credit to Fab for expertly navigating the crew through the course.
We also want to recognise the Intermediate Eight, who faced a very different challenge: equipment failure. Moments before racing, the crew discovered a rogue washer was letting water into the boat — a reminder of just how fickle rowing can be. Safety always comes first, and we’re proud of the crew for making the tough but correct decision to withdraw. Special thanks to Captain Sean for diving in (literally) to try and resolve the issue — a true example of Otter commitment and care.
We’ll be back next year, better, faster, and ready to take on West London once again.
